Percentage Of Population Living On Less Than 1 Dollar Per Day
"Communicable diseases kill more than 14 million people per year, mainly in the developing world. In these countries, approximately 46% of all deaths are due to communcable disease, and 90% of these deaths are attributed to acute diarrheal and respiratory infections of children, AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and measles."
Control of Communicable Disease Manual,
18th edition (preface).
Many diseases do not kill quickly and maim millions. Schistosomiasis, filariasis and onchocerciasis contribute to a large burden of suffering, decreased work-time and increased poverty. If somebody is sick, they cannot work and if they do not work, they do not eat.
The vast majority of illness and mortality in developing nations are preventable with basic healthcare. Vaccinization, antibiotics and education on healthcare can literally change the lives of billions.
